1. Take Inventory, Group & Dispose
Organizing a messy spice cabinet can feel overwhelming. The first step is to clear everything out and take inventory of what you have. Dispose of any expired spices and seasonings. Then group together any duplicate items to prepare for the next step.
2. Label Your Jars & Combine Like Items
While it may seem tedious, we highly recommend labeling and storing your spices in clear, uniform-sized jars. But why? Don't they already come labeled? Besides looking cleaner aesthetically, it's easier for the eye to scan the print when the jars and labels are the same. Remember how we grouped duplicate spices in the first step? Now we can combine them into one container for instant space saving.
3. Prioritize by Level of Use & Store Near Stove
Now that your spices and seasonings are combined and labeled, it's time to restock. Think of it less as "putting items away" and more as "putting them where they're needed." Try to store all of your spices near the stove for easy access during cooking. Consider your kitchen setup and what will provide the best flow of movement. Maybe you have spacious drawers adjacent to your stove--no reaching or crouching required. Or, if storing in a cabinet, keep your most used items on the lower shelves toward the front. Even for your lesser used items, avoid pushing them so far back they can't be viewed or accessed.
4. Free Up Cabinet Space & Opt for Built-In Storage
If you are considering updating your kitchen, then add in some creative storage solutions to free up your cabinet space for bulkier items. Add a built-in lazy Susan or double pull-out spice racks on both sides of the range. Need some ideas? 5. Streamline Your Shopping Habits
As tempting as it is, avoid buying in bulk. You'll be surprised just how many items go unused. Now that your spices and seasonings are properly organized, it will be easier to eyeball when you're running low on an item and can stock up accordingly.
